The Life of Pi - Yann Martel

I always have liked reading books more than watching the movies coz the detailed description mentioned in the book can never be compared to a movie. I have read all the Harry Potter books and have also seen the movies wherein I enjoyed reading books more. Same was the case with Twilight series and Catch me if you can. In all the above mentioned I made sure to read the book first and then see the movie.

However, this time around I saw the movie first and absolutely loved it. The depiction of the survival is portrayed brilliantly. I decided to read the book to see what all details were missed in the movie as is the case since a movie has a limited run time.  I indented an order for the book through Librarywala.com.

To start with initially the book was in sync with the movie. Slowly into the book, lots of things had changed in the movie and lot of things were not depicted in the movie which was mainly the author's philosophy. In a way it was good that it was not incorporated in the movie else the movie would have lost its essence. The movie's main focus was how Pi survived with a fully grown Bengal Tiger in a life boat. The book starts the focus on lifeboat only halfway through. I must admit that in between I found the book quite boring with lots of authors philosophy in it.

There is no character of Ananya in the book as depicted in the movie with whom Pi was involved. Also the name of the tiger "Richard Parker" was clarified in the book a lot later which was shown in the movie in the initial scenes itself.

The book does get interesting and detailed description of the voyage in a life boat does make it a good read. Movie also doesn't depict another man meeting Pi on a lifeboat when he gets blind and Richard Parker killing and eating that man.

The animations in the movie is truly wonderful and beautiful illustration of the book. And this time I have to admit that movie a better make of the book. Though the book is a one time read for those who wish to read what has been missed in the movie.
