I am always inclined towards reading biographies since it showcases the struggles of an individual and displays the unknown facet of that person. The title "From Thug to Scholar" is a very interesting title which made me pick this book.
This book is a combination of Self-help, Autobiography, Spiritual insight and Philosophy.
First the strengths of the book. The book is a true inspiration of how a person leading the life of a thug and engaged in drugs, sex and street fighting found his inner calling and became a scholar and a very respected person in the society. The journey on the path towards achieving the purpose of life of Dr. James is portrayed in an inspiring manner. Some of the incidents are beautifully described as if those are happening right in front of your eyes. The lessons learned at the end of each chapter are great ones. One can actually gift this book to their sons and daughters and make them aware of the consequences of choosing the wrong path in their lives. The book also gives an insight on sex education and how one should never take things casually wherein Dr. James became a father at the age of 15.
Now coming to the weaknesses of the book. The book seems repetitive at lot many places wherein the same are thing is mentioned many times. The book is not edited properly, I can say this as the grammer of the book is terrible. For. E.g. the place where ‘There’ should be used ‘Their’ is used and the places where "Their" is to be used "There" is used and few places where "our" term had to be used, the word "are" is used. The first few chapters focusses more on philosophy rather than real incidents which is a bit of put off.
Overall a good book which could have been much better had it been edited properly. One can give a try reading this book to experience the journey of Dr. James where he realises the true purpose of his life.
